I gave it thirty minutes and the entire time it said it was "preparing backup" I stopped the backup just to see if it was a one-time glitch. Finally, I clicked it and it says that it has been "preparing backup" all day long. Just today I've noticed that the time machine icon in my menu bar won't stop spinning.

I have two external hard drives that I use for time machine backups. I can see the latest backup that I made by clicking on "Backup now". When I click "Enter Time machine", everything seems to work as normal. It seems that backups occur as normal (when I click on the icon, and choose "Backup now", it seems to backup).
